I have taken many day trips from Baku, but none makes people smile like this one. Two hours west of the capital, in the rolling green hills of Shamakhi, a family of alpacas from the Andes has made Azerbaijan its home. They are curious, gentle and impossibly soft, and they will happily eat from your hand. Our private Shamakhi alpaca farm tour from Baku combines that joy with real history. First you climb inside the Diri Baba Mausoleum, a two-storey tomb carved into a cliff in 1402. Then you step into the Shamakhi Juma Mosque, founded in the 8th century and one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus, in the city that was once the capital of the Shirvanshahs and a key stop on the Silk Road. Next comes the highlight: Alpaca Azerbaijan in Meysari village, the country's first alpaca farm. Walk among the herd, feed them, take the photos your friends will envy and shop for soft alpaca-wool souvenirs. Just a few minutes away, lunch is served at Abqora Restaurant & Wine Club, set among the Meysari vineyards with views of the lake and the hills. Try dolma, qutab and lamb with freshly baked bread, and a glass of local organic wine if you like. It is a private tour: just your group and a professional English- or Russian-speaking driver, in a sedan, SUV, minivan, Mercedes Sprinter or bus. Perfect for families with children, couples, friends and corporate groups. Tour highlights • Feed and pet the alpacas at Alpaca Azerbaijan, the country's first alpaca farm • Climb inside the Diri Baba Mausoleum, built into a cliff face in 1402 • Visit the Shamakhi Juma Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus • Lunch at Abqora Restaurant & Wine Club among the Meysari vineyards • Shop for soft alpaca-wool scarves, hats and souvenirs • A playground at the farm keeps children happy • Private car, flexible timing, English- or Russian-speaking driver, hotel pick-up in Baku Tour itinerary About 250 km round trip and 9 hours. Pick-up at 09:00, back in Baku about 18:00. 1. Pick-up in Baku (09:00). Your driver meets you at your hotel or any Baku address and heads west through the Gobustan hills. 2. Diri Baba Mausoleum, Maraza (about 2 hours from Baku). A mysterious two-storey tomb carved into a cliff in 1402. Climb the narrow inner stairs to the upper room and look out over the village and its old cemetery. 30 minutes. 3. Shamakhi Juma Mosque. Founded in the 8th century, this is one of the earliest mosques in the Caucasus. Earthquakes destroyed it many times, and each time Shamakhi rebuilt it; its restored domes and arches now shine again. 40 minutes. 4. Alpaca Azerbaijan farm, Meysari village. The star of the day. Walk among the herd, feed and stroke the alpacas, and take photos with the green hills behind you. Children love the farm playground, and the gift shop sells handmade alpaca-wool products. 1.5 hours. 5. Lunch at Abqora Restaurant & Wine Club (not included). A short drive away, this elegant restaurant sits in the Meysari vineyards with a terrace overlooking the lake. Drop-off at your hotel, any Baku address or Heydar Aliyev Airport. Vehicles One price per car, not per person.
