First Time Visiting Baku – Everything You Need Before You Land

First-time visitors to Baku consistently say the same thing: the city is not what they expected. It is more modern, more safe, more affordable, and more fascinating than most people anticipate. This guide covers everything you need to know before your first arrival — from the airport to the Old City and beyond.

Arriving at Heydar Aliyev International Airport

Heydar Aliyev Airport is a modern, clean, well-organized facility. Immigration and customs are straightforward for holders of e-visas — have your visa confirmation printed or clearly accessible on your phone. After baggage collection, you enter the arrivals hall where your Luxline driver will be waiting with your name if you have pre-booked your transfer. If you have not pre-booked: get a local SIM first, then use Bolt. Avoid the unofficial taxi drivers at the exit — prices are not fixed and first-time visitors reliably overpay.

Getting a Local SIM Card

Azerbaijani SIM cards are available at the airport arrivals area from Azercell, Bakcell, or Nar Mobile kiosks. A tourist SIM with data costs very little and gives you Bolt, Google Maps, and communication for your entire stay. Get one on arrival — it makes everything easier.

Money in Baku

The currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). ATMs are available throughout Baku and at the airport. Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants, and most shops in the city center. Rural areas — villages, mountain stops, roadside markets — are cash only. Always carry some Manats when leaving Baku.

Is Baku Safe for First-Time Visitors?

Azerbaijan is one of the safest countries in the world for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. Pickpocketing is minimal compared to most European cities. The police presence in Baku signals security, not danger. Walk freely, explore confidently, and apply the same common sense you would in any city.

What Not to Miss on a First Visit

The Old City — Icherisheher — is the essential starting point: Maiden Tower, Shirvanshah's Palace, the carpet shops of the inner quarter. The Flame Towers at night. The Heydar Aliyev Center. The Caspian Boulevard at sunset. And at least one day trip outside the city — Gobustan is one hour away and contains some of the most extraordinary prehistoric art on Earth.

Getting Around Baku

Bolt for city movement once you have a SIM. Walk for the Old City and central attractions — the tourist core is compact. Pre-book Luxline for airport transfers, day trips, and any intercity journey. The metro is efficient for longer city distances.
