2-Day Sheki Tour from Baku via Shamakhi, Lahij & Gabala Seven centuries, three mountain regions and one unforgettable road trip along Azerbaijan's Silk Road, in your own private car. Duration: 2 days / 1 night From: 210 $ per car Leave Baku in the morning and reach the Silk Road city of Sheki by evening, stopping at a 600-year-old cliff mausoleum, one of the Caucasus's oldest mosques, the copper-craft village of Lahij and the mountain lake of Nohur. Day two is all Sheki: the Khan's Palace, the ancient Kish church, a real caravanserai and the town's famous halva shops. Tour overview If you only have time for one trip outside Baku, make it this one. Our private 2-day Sheki tour from Baku follows the old caravan road north-west into the Greater Caucasus, from the dry hills of Gobustan to the green forests of Ismayilli and Gabala, and ends in Sheki, the jewel of the Azerbaijani Silk Road. On day one you climb to the cliff-side Diri Baba Mausoleum, step inside the Shamakhi Juma Mosque, founded in the 8th century, and walk the stone streets of Lahij, where coppersmiths still hammer pots by hand. You drive through the Topchu forest and stop at Nohur Lake in Gabala, framed by snow-capped peaks, before checking in to your hotel in Sheki. Day two is a full Sheki city tour. See the stained-glass rooms of the Sheki Khan's Palace, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visit the ancient Albanian church in Kish village, walk into a 200-year-old Silk Road caravanserai and taste fresh Sheki halva straight from the bakers' trays. Then relax on the drive back to Baku. The whole trip is private: just you, your group and a professional English- or Russian-speaking driver in a clean, modern car. Choose a sedan, SUV, minivan, Mercedes Sprinter or full-size bus. We can also book your hotel in Sheki for any budget, from a family guesthouse to a 5-star resort. Tour highlights • See the best of 5 regions (Gobustan, Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Gabala, Sheki) in 2 days without changing cars or joining a crowded group • Climb into the Diri Baba Mausoleum, built into a cliff face in 1402 • See the Shamakhi Juma Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus • Walk the cobbled lanes of Lahij, Azerbaijan's mountain village of coppersmiths • Breathe forest air in Topchu and take photos at Nohur Lake under the Caucasus peaks • Explore the Sheki Khan's Palace, famous for its shebeke stained glass made without a single nail or drop of glue • Visit the ancient Albanian church of Kish, one of the oldest Christian sites in the Caucasus • Taste real Sheki halva and piti in the old town • Private car, flexible stops, English or Russian-speaking driver, free hotel pick-up in Baku Day 1: Baku – Diri Baba – Shamakhi – Lahij – Topchu – Gabala – Sheki About 380 km and 11–12 hours with stops. Leave the city along the Caspian coast and head west into the semi-desert hills of Gobustan. 2. Diri Baba Mausoleum, Maraza (about 2 hours from Baku). A two-storey tomb carved into a cliff in 1402, said to hold a saint whose body never decayed. Climb the narrow inner staircase to the upper room for a view over the village and the old cemetery. 30 minutes. 3. Shamakhi Juma Mosque. Founded in 743–744, this is one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus, rebuilt after many earthquakes and restored in 2013. Shamakhi was once the capital of the Shirvanshahs and a key Silk Road town. 40 minutes. 4. Lahij village, Ismayilli. Turn off the highway and follow the Girdimanchay river gorge up to Lahij, about 1,200 m above sea level. Walk the cobbled main street, watch coppersmiths at work, see the old stone drainage system and buy handmade copper, carpets or herbal tea. Lunch at a local restaurant (not included). About 2 hours with lunch. 5. Topchu forest. On the way back from Lahij the road runs through the green Topchu forest along the river. Short stop for fresh air, walking and photos. 20 minutes. 6. Coffee or tea at the lakeside cafe. 45 minutes. 7. Arrival in Sheki (about 19:30–20:00). About 1.5 hours from Gabala. Your driver drops you at your hotel. Dinner and overnight in Sheki (hotel not included; we can book it on request). Day 2: Sheki city tour – Kish – return to Baku About 320 km and 11 hours with stops. Pick-up at 09:00, back in Baku about 20:00–21:00. 1. Kish Albanian Church (09:15). Just 5 km into the mountains from Sheki, this small stone church was built by the Caucasian Albanians, one of the region's earliest Christian peoples. It was restored with help from the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl's team and now works as a museum. 45 minutes. 2. Sheki Khan's Palace. The summer residence of the Sheki khans, built in the 18th century and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Sheki with the Khan's Palace" (2019). Its walls are covered in painted hunting and battle scenes, and its windows are made of shebeke: thousands of pieces of coloured glass held in wooden lattice with no nails or glue. Photography inside is not allowed. 1 hour. 3. Shebeke workshop. Watch a master build a shebeke panel by hand a few steps from the palace. Small pieces are a perfect souvenir. 20 minutes. 4. Upper Caravanserai (Yukhari Karvansaray). A huge two-storey Silk Road inn where merchants once stayed with their camels. Walk through the arched courtyard and imagine the caravans arriving from Persia and Russia. 30 minutes. 5. Old town and halva shops.
