Northern Azerbaijan contains two of the most extraordinary destinations in the entire Caucasus — and they sit within the same region, less than two hours apart. Guba, with its ancient multicultural town, colorful Candy Cane Mountains, and the only Jewish settlement in the Muslim world. And Khinalig — one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages on Earth, perched above 2,200 meters in the Greater Caucasus, home to people who speak a language found nowhere else on the planet. A Luxline combined tour covers both properly, either as an extended day trip or a comfortable overnight itinerary.
Day One: Guba – Candy Cane Mountains and Red Village
The journey north from Baku takes approximately two hours on excellent highway. The first stop is the Candy Cane Mountains — striking rock formations in layered bands of red, orange, cream, and pink, located just 30 minutes off the main road. From there, the tour continues into Guba town and across the river to Red Village — Qırmızı Qəsəbə — the ancient Mountain Jewish settlement that has existed peacefully in this Muslim-majority region for centuries. The village has its own synagogue, cemetery, and holy sites, all maintained continuously and openly. Lunch at Aynur Gala restaurant, set directly inside the forest, completes the Guba portion of the tour.
Day Two: Khinalig – The Village at the Top of the World
From Guba, the road to Khinalig climbs steadily into the Greater Caucasus for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Luxline provides 4x4 vehicles — Land Cruiser or Mitsubishi Pajero — for this section of the route. The village appears suddenly from the mountain road: stone houses stacked against the hillside, unchanged in their essential form for centuries. The people of Khinalig are descendants of the ancient Caucasian Albanians and speak a language isolate that shares no mutual intelligibility with Azerbaijani or any other regional language. Local families open their homes to travelers, providing accommodation and food with a generosity that reflects a hospitality culture unchanged by tourism. A local guide is included in all Luxline Khinalig visits — the village history is deep enough that going without context means missing most of what makes it significant.
Camping Option
For travelers who want to go further, Luxline organizes overnight camping in the open highlands beyond Khinalig — tents, fires, and a sky full of stars at 2,200 meters, with local guides managing the camp. It is an experience that travelers consistently describe as among the most memorable of their lives.
Flexible Itinerary, Fixed Price
The Guba and Khinalig combined tour can be structured as a long two-day itinerary with an overnight stay in Guba or Khinalig, or as an extended single day for travelers with limited time. All prices fixed before departure. 4x4 vehicle included for the Khinalig road section.
