Gabala - Shahdag and Baku Tour - Complete tour package

Planning a trip to Azerbaijan but not sure where to start? This guide gives you a complete, ready-to-follow 7-day road trip itinerary covering the best of the country — from Baku's ancient UNESCO-listed old city to the lush green mountains of Gabala and the dramatic Caucasus peaks of Shahdag. We've included day-by-day schedules, attraction prices, driving distances, hotel recommendations and practical tips so you can travel confidently.

Azerbaijan is one of the most underrated destinations in the world. Sitting at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, this small South Caucasus country packs extraordinary diversity into a compact space: medieval walled cities, ancient petroglyphs, alpine ski resorts, subtropical forests, carpet-weaving villages, and one of the region's most exciting culinary scenes. Yet most first-time visitors stick to Baku and miss what lies beyond.

This 7-day private car itinerary is designed for international travellers who want to see the real Azerbaijan — the forested mountain regions, the waterfalls, the cable cars, the village roads that wind through the Caucasus — without the complexity of navigating unfamiliar roads or relying on limited public transport.

🚘 WHY A PRIVATE DRIVER MAKES SENSE IN AZERBAIJAN

  • Public buses to Gabala and Shahdag exist but run infrequently and don't serve most attractions directly.

  • Many of the best sights — Laza village, Seven Beauties Waterfall, Shongar Spring — are on rural roads not easily served by taxis.

  • An English-speaking driver also doubles as an informal guide, helping with local restaurants, hidden stops, and practical advice.

  • For groups of 2–6 people, a private car is often more cost-effective than alternatives once you add up public transport, separate taxis and wasted time.

📍 Gabala — 3 Nights

Gabala (also spelled Qabala) is Azerbaijan's premier mountain resort town, nestled in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus about 215 km northwest of Baku. In summer it's a playground of green valleys, waterfalls, pine forests and adventure activities. In winter it transforms into a ski destination. Either way, it's the gateway to the mountains and the natural highlight of any Azerbaijan road trip.

DAY 2

Tufandag Cable Car & Seven Beauties Waterfall

This is the best day in Gabala. Tufandag Mountain Resort is the centrepiece a world-class cable car that takes you up to panoramic Caucasus views, followed by one of Azerbaijan's most beautiful waterfall hikes in the afternoon.

10:00 - Tufandag Cable Car. The two-stage cable car takes about 30 minutes total and climbs to a height of approximately 1,870m. The views from the summit over the Caucasus foothills are spectacular worth every manat of the ticket price.

11:30 - Mountain Swing. At the summit, try the Mountain Swing a wide swing that launches you over the edge of the peak. Terrifying and unforgettable in equal measure.

13:00 - Lunch at the mountain restaurant at the summit or back at the base.

15:00 - Yeddi Gozel (Seven Beauties) Waterfall. A 200-step climb through lush green forest to a stunning multi-tiered waterfall. The path is well-maintained and takes about 20–25 minutes each way. Swimming at the base is possible in summer.

Evening - Return to Gabala for a relaxed dinner. Highly recommended: a riverside restaurant with outdoor seating — a staple of Gabala's summer dining scene.

DAY 3

Lavender Garden, Shongar Spring & Gabala Old Town (Relaxed countryside day  - Best season for lavender: late May–July)

A gentler day in the Gabala area before heading north to Shahdag tomorrow. Today is about countryside colours, natural springs, local markets and a taste of slow Azerbaijani life.

09:00 - Essenso Lavender Garden. A stunning lavender field at its peak in July rows of violet blooms against a mountain backdrop. Complimentary lavender bouquet included at entry. Best in morning light before the heat builds.

14:00 - Gabala Old Town & Bazaar. Wander the historic centre, browse the market for local honey, dried mulberries, walnuts and handmade ceramics. A lively, authentic Azerbaijani market experience.

Evening - Early dinner and rest. Pack bags tomorrow's drive to Shahdag starts in the morning.

📍 Shahdag Mountain Resort — 2 Nights (Days 4 & 5)

Shahdag (also known as Şahdağ) is Azerbaijan's premier alpine resort, perched high in the Qusar district of the Greater Caucasus. At over 2,200m elevation, it offers sweeping mountain panoramas, ski runs in winter, and hiking, cable cars, and adventure sports in summer. The drive from Gabala through the mountains via Laza village is one of the most scenic road trips in the entire Caucasus region.

DAY 4

Gabala → Laza Village → Shahdag Resort (Drive: ~90 km / ~2.5 hours  |  Scenic mountain route via Qusar)

The drive from Gabala to Shahdag passes through increasingly dramatic Caucasus scenery. The highlight is Laza village — a remote highland community with breathtaking mountain backdrops and a spectacular waterfall accessible on foot.

09:00 - Checkout and depart Gabala heading northwest through Qusar district.

11:30 - Laza Village stop. One of the most photogenic spots in Azerbaijan a traditional mountain village ringed by snow-capped Caucasus peaks even in summer. A 1-hour hike each way leads to the Laza Waterfalls through alpine scenery. Allow 2–3 hours here.

13:30 - Lunch at a local homestay or simple café in Laza. Try düşbərə (tiny lamb dumplings) and fresh mountain herbs.

15:00 - Arrive Shahdag Resort. Check in, explore the resort grounds. The infrastructure here is comparable to European mountain resorts restaurants, cafés, activity centres.

Evening - Optional: small zip line or buggy rides at the resort. Dinner at the resort restaurant the views of the surrounding peaks at dusk are extraordinary.

DAY 5

Full Day at Shahdag: Cable Car, Coaster & Mountains (Full day at resort  |  Cable car and coaster open from 10:00 AM)

The best day of the entire trip for pure mountain adventure. Shahdag's cable car, mountain coaster and viewpoints are world-class — and remarkably affordable compared to Alpine equivalents.

10:00 - Shahdag Cable Car. The cable car climbs to around 2,200m. At the summit you are above the clouds on clear days, with an uninterrupted panorama of the Greater Caucasus range. Snow jackets are available for rent if the summit air is cold.

12:00 - Shahdag Mountain Coaster. A 4-minute alpine roller coaster where you control your own speed. One of the most popular attractions at the resort thrilling, fun for all ages.

13:30 - Lunch at the resort kumpir (stuffed baked potato), pizza, or traditional Azerbaijani plov.

15:00 - Mount Shahdag viewpoint. A short walk from the resort to take in views of the highest peak in the area. Optional afternoon activities: buggy rides, karting, ATV (availability varies by season).

Evening - Spa or pool at Pik Palace. Dinner at the resort a memorable last mountain night.

📍 Baku — 2 Nights (Days 6 & 7)

Baku is one of the most visually dramatic capitals in the world a city where medieval walls and Silk Road caravanserais stand directly alongside Zaha Hadid's flowing modernist architecture and a futuristic skyline of flame-shaped towers. Most first-time visitors find it unlike any other city they've seen. If you've been using Baku only as an arrival and departure point, two dedicated days here completely changes the picture.

DAY 6

Shahdag → Baku: Old City, Boulevard & Flame Towers (Drive: ~180 km / 3 hours  |  Arrive early afternoon)

The final drive of the road trip. Arriving in Baku by early afternoon gives you a full afternoon and evening in the old city.

09:00 - Checkout and depart Shahdag. Comfortable 3-hour drive south to Baku.

12:30 - Arrive Baku. Drop luggage at hotel. Lunch in the city.

14:00 - Icheri Sheher (Old City). Baku's walled medieval city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander the labyrinthine alleyways, visit the Maiden Tower (12th century) and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Street musicians and artisan workshops fill the old lanes.

17:00 - Baku Boulevard. The grand 3-km seafront promenade along the Caspian Sea. Especially beautiful in the late afternoon light, with families, vendors and musicians filling the walkway.

After dark - Flame Towers LED Show. Baku's three iconic sky-scrapers become giant screens after dark, pulsing with animated flames, Azerbaijani flags and patterns. Best viewed from Highland Park or the Boulevard. Unmissable.

DAY 7

Baku: Heydar Aliyev Center, Carpet Museum, Funicular & Baku Eye (Full day in the city  |  Note: Heydar Aliyev Center closed Mondays)

A full day to absorb the best of Baku's cultural landmarks — from one of the world's most architecturally acclaimed buildings to a museum shaped like a folded carpet.

10:30 - Heydar Aliyev Center. Zaha Hadid's masterpiece a building that appears to flow like a white wave from the ground. Inside: rotating cultural exhibitions, a vintage car collection and a gift shop with some of the best Azerbaijani crafts in the city. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

13:00 - Azerbaijan Carpet Museum. The museum building itself is shaped like a folded carpet visible from the Boulevard. Inside, one of the world's finest collections of Azerbaijani rugs, textiles and traditional arts. A genuinely fascinating museum even if you're not a textile enthusiast.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Baku to Gabala?

The most comfortable option is a private car or taxi, which takes around 3 hours (215 km). Public buses run from Baku's Bayil bus terminal but operate on fixed schedules and don't stop at the main attractions along the route. For a flexible, hassle-free journey — particularly with luggage or as a group — a private driver is by far the most practical choice. Luxline can arrange this transfer with an English-speaking driver.

Is Azerbaijan safe for tourists?

Yes. Azerbaijan is considered one of the safest destinations in the South Caucasus for international tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare, locals are generally hospitable and welcoming, and tourism infrastructure in Baku, Gabala and Shahdag is modern and well-developed. Standard travel precautions apply, as in any destination.

What is the best time of year to visit Gabala and Shahdag?

For summer travel — green mountains, waterfalls, hiking, cable cars and outdoor activities — June through September is ideal. The lavender garden in Gabala peaks in late May to July. For skiing and snow at Shahdag, December through March is the season. July and August are peak summer — book hotels well in advance, particularly at Shahdag resort where accommodation sells out quickly.

Do I need a visa to visit Azerbaijan?

Most nationalities can apply for an Azerbaijani e-Visa online at evisa.gov.az before travel — the process typically takes 3 business days and costs around $20–$25 USD. Citizens of some countries including Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine and several others do not require a visa at all. Always verify the latest entry requirements for your specific nationality before booking.

How much does a private driver cost in Azerbaijan?

A private car with driver in Azerbaijan typically costs between 150–300 AZN ($90–$175 USD) per day, depending on the distance covered, vehicle type and duration. English-speaking drivers may carry a modest premium. For multi-day routes like this 7-day itinerary, package rates are available and substantially reduce the per-day cost. Contact Luxline for a specific quote based on your group size and route.

What currency is used in Azerbaijan and can I pay by card?

The local currency is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). In Baku, card payments are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops. In Gabala and Shahdag resort areas, most hotels and attractions also accept cards. However, smaller restaurants, local markets, waterfall parking and rural stops often require cash. We recommend carrying some manat in cash at all times when travelling outside Baku.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. This 7-day structure works well as a standalone template but can be adapted in many ways adding Shaki (a UNESCO-listed historic city about 100 km west of Gabala), extending the Gabala or Shahdag sections, adjusting the Baku days, or starting the trip from the airport. Luxline offers fully customised private tour packages tailored to group size, interests and travel dates.

What language is spoken in Azerbaijan and will English be understood?

The official language is Azerbaijani. Russian is also widely spoken, especially among older generations. English is increasingly common in Baku, at major hotels and tourist sites, but less prevalent in rural areas, small restaurants and local markets. Travelling with an English-speaking driver significantly reduces this barrier throughout the journey.

Is there good food in Gabala and Shahdag?

Yes both destinations have excellent dining. Gabala is known for its forest restaurants with outdoor seating, fresh river trout, shashlik (grilled skewers), piti (slow-cooked lamb and chickpea soup) and local honey. Shahdag resort has a range of options from traditional Azerbaijani dishes to international cuisine at the resort restaurants. Road trip meals in Azerbaijan are generally a highlight rather than an afterthought.

How far in advance should I book hotels in Gabala and Shahdag?

In peak summer (July–August), Shahdag resort accommodation especially Pik Palace books out weeks in advance. We recommend securing hotel reservations at least 4–6 weeks before your travel dates for a summer trip. Gabala has more capacity but top properties like Qafqaz Riverside also fill up. Booking early gives you both availability and better rates.
