Baku City Break – How to Spend 3 to 4 Days in Azerbaijan's Capital
Baku has become one of Europe and the Middle East's most compelling city break destinations — a capital that combines ancient history, striking modern architecture, excellent food, and genuine affordability in a package that rewards even a long weekend visit. Here is how to use 3 to 4 days in Baku properly.
Day 1: The Old City and Modern Baku
Start inside the walls of Icherisheher — the Old City — where the Maiden Tower, Shirvanshah's Palace, and the carpet shops of the inner quarter will absorb your morning. In the afternoon, walk through modern Baku: the Flame Towers, the Caspian Boulevard, and the Heydar Aliyev Center. End the day at a rooftop restaurant in the Old City with a view of both the ancient walls and the illuminated towers behind them.
Day 2: Gobustan Day Trip
One hour south of Baku, Gobustan National Park contains ancient rock carvings made by some of the earliest humans on this land — images of hunters, animals, and dancing figures carved into stone before writing was invented. Add the mud volcanoes 12 kilometers further — a lunar landscape of bubbling grey pools unlike anything you will have seen elsewhere. Return to Baku for dinner.
Day 3: Baku in Depth
The parts of Baku that the first day misses: the covered bazaar, the residential neighborhoods above the Old City, the Ateshgah fire temple on the Absheron Peninsula, and a proper Azerbaijani tea ceremony at 145 Tea Lounge. If you have energy in the evening, the night tour of the city — the Flame Towers light display, the Old City by amber light — is a completely different experience from the daytime version.
Day 4 (If You Have It): Sheki or Shamakhi
A fourth day opens up the option of a day trip to Shamakhi — one of the world's oldest mosques, free entry, 1.5 hours from Baku — or even an overnight in Sheki if your schedule allows. The road there passes through Topchu Forest, where local vendors sell homemade honey alongside the highway. Both options give your city break a dimension that most visitors to Baku never reach.

Baku has a functioning metro and app-based taxis via Bolt. Old Town - Icherisheher
Baku’s medieval core is a UNESCO-protected site surrounded by 12th-century walls, brimming with history and Eastern architecture. Here you’ll find the Maiden Tower, Baku’s most mysterious site – no one knows for certain what it was originally built for! Meanwhile, occupying the highest spot in the citadel, the Shirvanshahs’ Palace was the 15th-century residence of Azerbaijan’s medieval rulers. Beyond its main attractions, the ‘Inner City,’ as it’s called by the locals, is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways home to some of Baku’s oldest residents, as well as artists’ workshops, souvenir stalls.
