Beshbarmaq – Azerbaijan's Sacred Five-Finger Mountain

The most powerful expression of Beshbarmaq's spiritual significance is the practice of ascending on foot. When a person makes a prayer at Beshbarmaq and vows that if their wish is granted they will climb the mountain entirely on foot — they mean from the very base, 6 to 10 kilometers of uphill rocky terrain, while cars pass them on the mountain road. On any visit to Beshbarmaq you will see these walkers. Moving slowly, steadily upward, fulfilling a promise made at a moment of genuine need. It is one of the most affecting sights in Azerbaijan.

The Atmosphere

A Russian tourist who visited described it: "Beshbarmaq combines complete tranquility and beautiful views with its own spiritual rituals. There is nowhere else quite like it." The north wind moves continuously across the summit ridge. The Caspian spreads below. Pilgrims and hikers and climbers all coexist on the same mountain, each finding what they came for.
