Twenty kilometers southwest of Gabala, the village of Nij contains something found nowhere else on Earth: the world's largest population of Udi people — direct descendants of the ancient Caucasian Albanians, one of the earliest civilizations of the South Caucasus.
Who Are the Udi People?
The Udis predate both Islam and the Turkic migrations that shaped the region's modern identity. They have maintained a continuous Christian tradition for over fifteen centuries — making their church in Nij one of the oldest continuously active Christian places of worship in the Caucasus. They speak Udi — an ancient language with no other speakers anywhere in the world outside this community and a small diaspora. Hearing it spoken on the streets of Nij is a genuinely rare linguistic experience.
The Ancient Church
Nij's church is not a heritage site maintained for tourists — it is an active place of worship that has been at the center of this community's religious life for over fifteen centuries. Visitors are welcome with respectful behavior.
The Village Market
The Nij market sells things unavailable elsewhere in Azerbaijan: homemade wines produced by families maintaining their own winemaking traditions, pork products reflecting the community's Christian food culture, and local produce from gardens and farms within the village. This is a working market, not a tourist market — everything sold here is produced by the people selling it.
