The heart of Gobustan is its open-air ethnography museum — a plateau of large boulders and rock faces, every surface worn smooth by millennia of wind and sun, covered in carvings made by hands that existed long before writing was invented. Hunting scenes, ancient animals, and human figures holding hands in what appear to be dancing formations — these are among the earliest forms of artistic expression anywhere on Earth. They predate the alphabet, predate organized religion as we know it, and predate almost every structure humanity has ever built.

The Gaval Stone – The World's First Musical Instrument

Among Gobustan's most remarkable features is the Gaval Daşı — the Gaval Stone — a large flat rock that, when struck with an ordinary stone, produces a clear, resonant, drum-like sound. Historians believe this stone was used by the earliest inhabitants of the site as a percussion instrument, potentially making it the oldest known musical instrument in human history. Standing at this stone and striking it, you are producing a sound that human beings have been hearing for ten thousand years.

Mud Volcanoes – A Lunar Landscape Near Baku

Approximately 12 kilometers from the main Gobustan site, the Absheron mud volcanoes are among the most surreal natural phenomena in the region — low-temperature geological formations where natural gas pressure pushes grey mud slowly to the surface in constantly bubbling pools. The landscape around them is unlike anything else in Azerbaijan. Combined with a morning at Gobustan, the mud volcanoes make for a complete and deeply unusual day out of Baku. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the mud volcano road.

Your visit begins at Gobustan's ground-level museum — a well-designed facility with detailed exhibitions and an interactive 3D video experience that takes you through the evolution of the region's wildlife and human inhabitants across thousands of years. Spend 30 to 45 minutes here before heading outside. There is also a small gift shop on site.

The reserve is natural habitat for snakes. The park management applies treatments along the designated pathways to keep the area safe for visitors. Stay on the marked trail at all times — everything worth seeing is accessible from the designated route.
